The most Bike-friendly cities and territories in Spain have been chosen

The provincial councils of Pontevedra and Gipuzkoa and the city councils of Pamplona and Torrent, winners of the II Bikefriendly Awards promoted by the Network of Cities for Bicycles.

In addition, the town councils of A Coruña, Valladolid, Logroño and Fuenlabrada have obtained second prize in different categories.

The Bikefriendly Awards will be presented on July 8 in Malaga, after the celebration of the II Urban Bicycle Meeting.

Bikefriendly Awards 2021 - Accesits

The Bikefriendly Awards 2021 driven by the Network of Bicycle Cities (RCxB) they already have winners. 

After receiving in this edition a total of 43 applications from public entities adhered to the RCxB, the jury has decided to recognize the effort shown by the provincial councils of Pontevedra and Gipuzkoa as well as for the town halls of Pamplona and Torrent to promote cycling as a means of urban transport. 

Furthermore, the town councils of A Coruña, Valladolid, Logroño and Fuenlabrada They have obtained second prizes in different categories. 

Winning applications of the Bikefriendly Awards 2021

Leadership and commitment

La Provincial Council of Pontevedra has obtained the 2021 Bikefriendly Award in the category 'Leadership and commitment' thanks to their efforts in the design and development of instruments aimed at promoting, coordinating and evaluating actions aimed at promoting the use of bicycles in their territories. 

A total of ten public entities submitted their candidacy for this category. The candidacies of Barcelona's town hall and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia They are the ones that have obtained the best evaluations from the jury after Pontevedra.

La Pontevedra Provincial Council has been chosen for its involvement in the ÁGORA project, an institutional action network between city councils and the Provincial Council that aims to value public space as a fundamental right of citizens. In this sense, the Ágora town councils substantially increase the space reserved for people, pedestrian and cyclable routes.

Cycling infrastructure

La Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa wins this edition with the Bikefriendly 2021 Award in the category of 'Cycling infrastructure for having designed and promoted new infrastructures and services necessary to guarantee faster, safer, more comfortable, coherent and intuitive cycling.

Thirteen public entities opted for recognition in this category in this edition. In second and third place were the A Coruña Town Hall and Las Palmas City Council, respectively.

The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa has been selected due to the promotion of Eibar – Maltzaga cycle route, recognized among good practices at the European level in the management of ERDF Funds. This route represents a large investment and an engineering milestone at the service of sustainable mobility. A connecting axis to overcome the orography while respecting the environment and people's health, which has quickly become one of the itineraries best valued by citizens.

Education and promotion

In the category of 'Education and Promotion’ obtains the Bikefriendly Award 2021 on Pamplona City Council. The council has demonstrated its commitment to cycling mobility through actions aimed at combating the barriers that hinder the daily use of bicycles through education, encouragement and communication to citizens. 

In this category, a total of 15 applications were received, those of Valencia City Hall and Sant Boi de Llobregat Town Hall the best valued by the jury after that of the winner, the Pamplona City Council.

The Pamplona City Council has obtained this recognition for the diversity of actions aimed at educating and promoting the bicycle as a means of daily transportation: practical training, walks
guided and communication campaigns. Fundamentally through the programsBicycle at School' and 'Bike School for Adults'. In parallel to campaigns such as 'Now that we are free, don't lock yourself in the car ' wave European Mobility Week. With the involvement of the entire mobility and cycling ecosystem. 

Bicycle economy 

In the fourth and final category of the 2021 Bikefriendly Awards, that of 'Bikeeconomy', emerges as winner Torrent Town Hall for having promoted economic activities related to the bicycle sector that affect local economic development. 

Five administrations presented their candidacy in this category, resulting in the Jaca City Council and City Council of Fuenlabrada in second and third place respectively. 

The Torrent City Council has been chosen as the winner in this category for the project 'Bikes for All / Bikes for Totes', which stands out for the collaboration of the City Council and the Col.lectiu Soterranya to guarantee access to a bicycle for all people who need it. The project is based on three pillars: solidarity, sustainability and sustainable mobility with the bicycle as a tool.

In addition, the jury of the 2021 Bikefriendly Awards has decided to grant the following recognitions among the nominations received: 

  • Innova second prize to the City Council of A Coruña for its commitment to taking advantage of the works or actions in the modification of traffic for the execution and increase of cycling infrastructure.
  • Second prize Sprinter to the Valladolid City Council by the Valladolid Green City Strategy and the rapid implementation of the Sustainable Corridors Network through low-cost technical actions. 
  • Second prize '30 Days by Bike' to the Logroño City Council for its involvement in the dissemination and promotion of the 30 Days on a Bike 2021 campaign among its citizens.
  • Second prize 'Bike to Work' to the Fuenlabrada City Council for its Commuting Limpio Fuenlabrada project and its comprehensive commitment to intermodality to encourage commuting to work by bicycle. 

Jury and evaluations

The jury of this edition has been integrated by Laura Vergara, general coordinator of ConBici, Ruth Lamas, coordinator of the Bicycle Cities Network, and Carlos Martín, director of the consulting area of ​​Bikefriendly Group.

In the evaluation of the candidatures for each of the categories of the Awards, the innovative component of the projects (up to 10 points), their real impact, with measurable incidence and palpable results (up to 10 points), its replicability (up to 10 points) and the level of involvement of local agents, citizens and stakeholders (up to 10 points). 

The Network of Cities for the Bicycle and Bikefriendly Group, promoters of the awards, have conveyed their gratitude to all the entities participating in this second edition of the Bikefriendly Awards for the great effort made and the quality of the reports presented. 

Bikefriendly 2021 Awards Ceremony

The awards ceremony will take place next July 8 in Malaga after the celebration of II Urban Bicycle Meeting. The delivery ceremony will take place in the Hotel Eurostars Malaga **** at a dinner for members of the Bicycle Cities Network.

Previously, that same day, it will take place in the Albéniz Cinema in Malaga the II Urban Bicycle Meeting. A collaborative day of the State Mobility Strategy in which success stories and problems when promoting cycling mobility will be announced. There will also be space for debate in a round table on 'General collaboration frameworks for the promotion of cycling', solutions for a intelligent management of urban mobility through IoT and Smart Data solutions, such as those from Amper Smart, and electric cycling mobility solutions will be presented such as those of Litium.

After the Urban Bicycle Meeting and prior to the Bikefriendly Awards ceremony, the Malaga City Council will lead a guided bicycle tour for those attending the Meeting and representatives of the RCxB. During the visit, the municipal team will present the latest advances in infrastructure and services related to bicycle mobility in the city, as well as problems and future projects.
