A brave woman and a dream on two wheels

Cristina Spínola: 3 years of travel, 28.000km and 27 countries on her trip around the world by bicycle.

«What pushes a journalist to leave everything to start something crazy like this? The will and desire to change. Carles Francino – “The Window”, Cadena Ser.
«In front of machetes and rifles, a bike.» Isabel Valdés – El País.

She was not the first to get on a bicycle, but yes the first Spaniard to circle the planet pedaling alone with the purpose of inspiring others and claiming the empowerment of women. Cristina Espínola, a freelance journalist and marketer from the Canary Islands, has adventure in her veins.

The book of his feat, published by Ediciones Casiopea under the title: «Alone on a bike: I dreamed big and touched the sky», collects everything experienced by this Canarian traveler.

«I believe that everything we do in life should be accompanied by a purpose to improve the world. Whatever it is. My goal is the empowerment of women.", says Cristina Spínola, who begins her story with the attack suffered in the middle of the night in the jungle of Taiping, in the north of Malaysia, at the hands of assailants.

«For the first time, they smell my fear and they seem to like it. I don't look at them, I concentrate on the dark road and controlling my balance as much as possible. Then I feel them grab my arm and push me towards the ditch. I lose my balance and fly into the air. Then they stop further ahead and approach walking, without rushing, while they laugh and insult me. I grope for the diving knife in the sheath tied to my calf and hold it in my hand in terror, pointing it at the approaching individuals shouting in a joking tone.

Cristina has managed to fulfill a dream that he set out to carry out in 2014: ""I take the first step and jump in, get on a plane and go to South Africa."

Her pedal strokes have led her along the most varied paths of Africa, India and Nepal, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, United States, Mexico, Central America and South America until reaching Ushuaia, south of Argentina, where their adventure ended:

«I remember my life and my loneliness during these three years and I feel abstract. I get off Susan and hug a column, with the name of Ushuaia, while I cry with rage and pleasure, I scream without strength while I hear myself far away, as if I were not there, knowing that although I have arrived, my destination has been the path. From now on, the only chains I will carry through life will be those on my bicycle.
