9 PEDAL PLANS THROUGH THE PROVINCE OF BARCELONA

Plan 1. Cycle tourism. The Drought of Manresa

La Dèquia is a canal built in the 14th century to transport water from the Llobregat river, from Balsareny to the capital of Bages. It is considered one of the main works of hydraulic engineering of the medieval period.

It is the medieval canal that has allowed the growth of Manresa and the agricultural development of a good part of Pla de Bages.

Follow the path that borders its route, 26 km. with a slope of only 10 m., constitutes a truly memorable experience: temples, fortifications, hydraulic works, farmhouses and natural spaces transformed by water, help us get to know a part of the heart of Catalonia.

A canal that after six centuries of its construction, is still fully operational, supplying all the water needed by the city of Manresa and other towns in Bages.

plan 2. Tourdera: Tordera and Arbúcies stream route

Within the tourism promotion program “Barcelona is much more”, the Tourdera project was born, whose main objective is to sustainably boost the natural and cultural resources near the Tordera River through hiking, cycle tourism and sports cycling (BTT).

From Montseny to the beaches of the Mediterranean, all lovers of nature and sports will be able to enjoy this route that offers a unique route due to its territorial diversity and heritage wealth.

The route is in the development phase, presenting three sections completed, signposted and open to the public:

Fogars de la Selva – Hostalric section

Gualba – La Batllòria section

Montseny – Sant Marçal section

Plan 3. Long-distance cycle tourism: Camí de Sant Jaume

For lovers of long journeys, we propose the Catalan Way of Santiago. A route of 494,23 km. which runs transversally through the interior of Catalonia, connecting: Gerona, Montserrat and Lérida. A pilgrim route that reaches the tomb of the apostle Saint James in Galicia.

Although it was initially born as a route with spiritual motivations, today it represents a route that allows you to enjoy a large amount of natural, scenic and cultural resources.

Already in the year 959, Abbot Caesarius of Montserrat made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. A route recovered in 1993 and signposted by the Association of Friends of the Camí de Sant Jaume (Sabadell). It is currently marked by the Generalitat of Catalonia.

Plan 4. MTB sports cycling. The Tanspirenaic

A journey of more than 1.000 km. that crosses the Pyrenees from east to west. From the Mediterranean Sea (Llançá) to the Atlantic Sea (Hondarribia). With a cumulative slope of 25.500 meters and a high technical difficulty, it becomes one of the most popular and beautiful mountain bike routes in the national territory, traveled annually by thousands of cyclists eager for adventure.

A route that divides into 16 stages The Berguedà region being the end of the step 4 and start of stage 5. The stage covers the section from Planoles to Bagà. From Ripollès to Berguedà through La Molina and La Masella.

With a distance of about 57km, the stage begins in Ripollès and ends by descending through the Gréixer Valley, within the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, already in Berguedá.

Plan 5. Cycle tourism. Penedès Slow Bike Route 360º

The influence of the sun and the Mediterranean Sea make Penedès a privileged territory for the cultivation of vineyards. In this environment, enjoying the sun among the vineyards, walking through towns and cities, and discovering great wines and their wineries, is an experience that will not leave you indifferent.

The proposed route will help us discover all the assets of the region that revolve around the Denomination of Origin Penedès.

A journey of 162 km. through landscapes covered with vineyards and fields, dry stone constructions, farmhouses, castles, hermitages and towns with the aroma of wine.

A very slow route specially designed to combine visits to wineries and tasting of local products throughout the tour.

A route that is recommended to take in 4 stages with a low level of difficulty both physically and technically.

Plan 6. Cycle tourism for urbanites. The Green Round of Barcelona

The Green Round is a marked circuit of roads and bike lanes which runs through the great natural systems of the Barcelonès region.

A circular itinerary 72 km. of bike lanes and a cumulative difference in altitude of 794 m. which runs through the Collserola Park, Besòs Fluvial Park, Serralada de Marina Park, Maritime Front, Montjuïc and Llobregat.

A route that can be started from any point along its route, taking advantage of the basic network of bike lanes in the same municipalities, or the connections available with the metropolitan public transport network.

The combination of natural environments with urban spaces, along with a large number of points of cultural, architectural, natural and tourist interest around the city of Barcelona, ​​make this route interesting for the cyclist who wants to circulate on quiet roads that pass through sparsely populated areas.

Plan 7. Family cycle tourism. The Nicolau Greenway

The Nicolau Greenway recovers the route of a railway which was used to transport wood from the forests of Gisclareny to Guardiola de Berguedà.

A very attractive itinerary that runs through forests, hanging bridges and numerous tunnels.

with a length of 6,10 km. It is ideal to do with children while you enjoy the green landscapes of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park.

Plan 8. Cycle tourism. Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park and the Beaches of the Llobregat Delta

Thanks to the recovery of ecosystems and wetlands, today it is possible to enjoy the native flora and fauna that live on the banks of the Llobregat River as it passes through the metropolitan area.

The route runs through the Llobregat River Park between Sant Boi and El Prat.

With a distance of 18,20km We will travel the last kilometers of the river before its union with the Mediterranean Sea.

A good alternative for those who wish to pedal more is to take the Green Way from Martorell to Prat, ending at the sea. A journey of 30 km. which follows the riverbed from the Devil's Bridge in Martorell to the Bunyola viewpoint, near the mouth of the Llobregat river.

Plan 9. MTB cycle sports. Routes through the BTT centers of the province of Barcelona

14 Natural Parks and 5 Mountain Bike Centers are some of the incentives that the province of Barcelona has for the practice of sports tourism through mountain biking.

All these infrastructures and natural environments are part of the TransCatalunya, a long-distance route that links all the BTT Centers in Catalonia in a circular way.

An itinerary that is made up of 5 great routes that add up to a total of 1.911,50 km. with a cumulative difference of 40m. at 2.800m.

THE BARCELONA DEPUTATION CONTINUES COMMITTING TO BICYCLE TOURISM

FUTURE ROUTES IN THE PROVINCE OF BARCELONA

1- Eurovelo Section 8 (under study)

EuroVelo is the name of the European network of cycle routes which currently has more than 45.000 km spread over 14 major routes that pass through 42 European countries.

The total project consists of more than 70.000km.

Section 8 of the EuroVelo routes or Mediterranean Route will pass through Catalonia, connecting Athens with Cádiz (5.388 km)

2- The Vía InterCatalunya (under study)

It is a cycle route that will connect Gerona with Lérida by bicycle passing through Vic, Manresa and Cervera. Rural roads, urban roads, greenways and disused railway sections.

The Department of Territory and Sustainability (DTES) has commissioned a specific study to specify the route and carry out the signage project. Currently, it is a project in the study phase.

3- Les Vies Blaves del Llobregat, el Cardener i l’Anoia (Blue Routes)

Within the tourism promotion program “Barcelona is much more”, a project of rehabilitation of the environment of the Llobregat river and its tributaries Anoia and Cardener which, under the name of “Blue Routes” will make more than 300 km passable. both for hikers, cyclists and horseback riding.
