Pedaling by sensation versus pedaling with a heart rate monitor
A few days ago I ran into a good friend while cycling along the roads of Huesca. I'd lost track of him since he moved to Barcelona for a few years, so we took the opportunity to catch up and talked about everything: family, work, the state of the country, and, of course, our shared passion, cycling.
He competed as an amateur, then switched to duathlon and then triathlon. He told me he hadn't touched a bike in ten years and was surprised when I told him I hadn't stopped riding in twenty years – obviously not every day because daily responsibilities prevent me, but I always find time to pedal wherever I can find it…
I asked him the reason for his absence for so many years: were you injured? Was it work?
– “No, no… I burned out! I realized that all that training and sacrifice is for nothing . And why haven’t you quit?”
