THE SOLIDARITY CAUSE
Children in Cusco face numerous obstacles: on the one hand, they are expected to contribute to the family income , which often leads to missed classes or dropping out of school. On the other hand, their families face dire situations such as gender-based violence, alcoholism, and a lack of resources.
Joining this soulful journey to Peru means helping us improve the living conditions of all these children through a magical project: the Yanapay Village School.

Trip description
The trip…
This trip through Peru will take you to explore the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Andean region, visiting some of the country's most iconic destinations. The adventure begins in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire , where you'll explore the charming San Blas neighborhood , known for its cobblestone streets, artisan workshops, and panoramic city views. Here, you'll also visit the Koricancha Temple, dedicated to the sun god Inti, and the impressive Sacsayhuaman fortress, a masterpiece of Inca engineering.
From Cusco, you'll travel to the picturesque town of Pisac , famous for its artisan market and the impressive Inca agricultural terraces that cascade down the surrounding mountains. The ruins of Pisac will showcase the Inca ingenuity in constructing terraces and irrigation systems, all in harmony with Pachamama, Mother Earth, whom the Incas deeply revered.
Your adventure in the Sacred Valley of the Incas will include two exciting cycling routes. The first route will take you from Lamay to Pisac , a journey that will allow you to enjoy spectacular scenery as you travel along rural roads that pass through indigenous communities and agricultural fields. This route is an immersion into the daily life of the valley, where ancestral traditions and the connection with nature are still preserved.
The second bike route will take you through the Maras and Moray area , two of the most fascinating sites in the Sacred Valley. At Moray, you'll discover the ruins of an impressive system of circular terraces that the Incas used as an agricultural laboratory to experiment with different crops and microclimates. This site is a stunning example of the Incas' agricultural knowledge and ecological wisdom. You'll then continue to the Maras Salt Mines , a series of ancient salt pans that have been exploited since pre-Incan times and are still used by local communities.
For those who wish to add a visit to Machu Picchu during the booking process, the trip will culminate with a trek along the Inca Trail, entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate , offering breathtaking aerial views of the mythical Inca citadel perched atop a mountain. This archaeological site, surrounded by lush vegetation and rugged mountains, is a testament to the architectural mastery and profound astronomical knowledge of the Incas. A visit to Machu Picchu will allow you to understand the spiritual and cultural significance of this place, considered sacred by the Incas. You can also add a visit to Huayna Picchu.
Finally, the trip will end with a hike to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), a natural wonder whose slopes are tinged with vibrant colors due to the mineral composition of the soil. This unique landscape is a sacred place for Andean communities and offers a perfect opportunity to reflect on the profound spiritual connection the Incas had with the earth and the cosmos.
The Solidarity Project…
Yanapay Village School
At Yanapay Village they work with children, teenagers, adults and families with the goal of helping them find, within themselves, the tools and motivation they need to advance in their personal development.
Currently, the NGO has two projects: an educational center in Cusco and an ecovillage in the Sacred Valley in Lamay , where we will be staying during our trip, located an hour from the city.
Aldea Yanapay is not an official school. The children follow the official school curriculum at their schools and then go to Aldea Yanapay to receive educational support and develop their artistic skills and creativity through various workshops.
In the village, they develop their instinct for self-protection and self-education, as they are offered an alternative education based on love, respect, creativity, and personal growth.
Travel with us and come discover a beautiful project that began operating in 2005.

Arrival in Cusco
Arrival in Cusco
We will fly at night. We will land in Cusco and take private taxis to the city where we will rest at a hotel located in the center.
The first days of adaptation to the altitude are very important, so the first day in Cusco will be a day of walking through the city center and resting at the accommodation. The day will be organized depending on how the group finds itself.
Visit to Cusco
Visit to Cusco
During our visit to Cusco, we will explore the city's historic heart, beginning with its iconic Plaza de Armas , or Main Square. This vibrant center is steeped in history and culture, where Inca and colonial architecture blend seamlessly in a spectacular setting. The Plaza de Armas has been the nerve center of Cusco since Inca times, when it was known as "Huacaypata," or the place of weeping, and served as the stage for important ceremonies.
Around the square, you can admire impressive colonial buildings, such as the Cusco Cathedral, a magnificent example of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, built on the ancient Inca temple of Suntur Wasi. We will also visit the Church of the Company of Jesus, another architectural jewel that stands out for its beautiful façade and its main altar of carved and gilded wood.
A stroll through downtown Cusco will immerse you in the city's unique atmosphere, where traces of the Inca past and colonial splendor intertwine. You'll explore vibrant streets lined with artisan shops, cafes, and restaurants offering the best of local cuisine. This visit will provide you with a deep understanding of Cusco's historical and cultural significance, considered the archaeological capital of the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit Cusco
Visit Cusco
During our stay in Cusco, we'll explore the charming San Blas neighborhood , known as the artisans' quarter. San Blas is famous for its narrow, steep, cobblestone streets, lined with workshops of artists and artisans who keep local traditions alive. Here, we'll visit some of the shops and galleries where you can find beautiful artwork, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry, all handcrafted using ancestral techniques passed down through generations.
After exploring San Blas, we'll enjoy an authentic traditional Peruvian meal at the San Blas Market itself . We'll sample typical dishes like ají de gallina, ceviche, and pachamanca, prepared with fresh, local ingredients and unique flavors that reflect the richness of Andean cuisine.
After lunch, we'll head to the majestic Sacred Valley of the Incas to spend the night in a special place: Villa Mágica in Lamay . This accommodation, located in the heart of the valley, offers a relaxing experience in direct contact with nature. Surrounded by mountains and breathtaking landscapes, Villa Mágica is the perfect place to disconnect and unwind, enjoying the tranquility and natural beauty of the surroundings. Here, you can rest under the starry Andean sky and recharge your energy for the adventures that await us in the following days.
Before dinner, Yuri will lead the OFFERING TO PACHA MAMA: the importance of thanking our mother earth for all the gifts she gives us without asking for anything in return is fundamental.

Trekking: Piuray Lagoon - Huchuy Qosqo and Sauna with Flowering Bath
The day begins early with an exciting trek that will take us through some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We depart from the beautiful Piuray Lagoon , located at an altitude of approximately 3,700 meters above sea level. This lagoon, surrounded by majestic mountains and cultivated fields, is a place of unique serenity, where the Andean sky is reflected in its crystal-clear waters.
From Piuray, we begin our trek, ascending ancient trails that lead us through a spectacular mountain landscape. As we gain altitude, the views become increasingly breathtaking, with panoramas encompassing the entire valley and the majestic Andean mountain ranges. This trek, reaching altitudes of over 4,000 meters, will allow us to experience the grandeur of the Andes at its finest.
Our first destination on the route is the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo , whose name means "Little Cusco" in Quechua. Located at an altitude of approximately 3,600 meters, this site is less well-known than others in the Sacred Valley, but equally fascinating. Huchuy Qosqo was an important Inca administrative and residential center , and here we will explore its agricultural terraces, stone enclosures, and storage systems. The remote location and tranquility of Huchuy Qosqo offer us a special connection to the Inca past and a unique opportunity to contemplate the surrounding mountains from a place steeped in history.
Halfway there, we will pause to enjoy a picnic in this impressive natural environment. Surrounded by the grandeur of the Andes, we will taste fresh and energizing foods, while we take a well-deserved rest and appreciate the tranquility of the place.
After lunch, we will continue our descent towards the picturesque town of Lamay, located about 2,900 meters above sea level. As we descend, the landscape will change, going from high mountains and meadows to a greener and more fertile environment, where the Vilcanota River flows serenely. Arriving at Lamay after a day of walking is a rewarding experience, where you can relax and reflect on the adventure lived together with some traditional beers that we will drink in the Plaza del Pueblo :)
This trekking will not only allow us to explore fascinating archaeological sites and dreamlike landscapes, but will also connect us deeply with the majesty of the Andes and the rich cultural heritage of the Sacred Valley.
In the afternoon, Yuri will lead the Mama Coca ceremony . The sacred and ancient coca leaf, in addition to its nutritional and social uses, has spiritual and therapeutic applications. Afterwards, we will have a sauna session with a flower bath to release all unnecessary energy from our body, mind, and spirit.

Bike route 2: Moray - Salineras de Maras
The second bike route of our trip will take us through the impressive archaeological ruins of Moray to the spectacular Maras Salt Mines . This route will allow us to explore the area at an altitude of between 3,500 and 3,800 meters above sea level, where panoramic views and the fresh Andean air will accompany us throughout the ride.
Our first rest stop will be in Moray, a unique Inca archaeological site renowned for its architecture . Moray is famous for its enormous concentric circular terraces , which the Incas used as an agricultural laboratory to experiment with different crops and microclimates. Here, we will learn how these terraces, which extend up to 30 meters into the ground, allowed the Incas to simulate various climates and optimize agricultural production. This site is a testament to the ingenuity and ecological wisdom of the Incas, who deeply understood the relationship between the land and the climate.
From Moray, we'll begin our descent by bicycle, traversing an Andean landscape that alternates between wide plains, gentle hills, and spectacular views of the mountain range. As we ride, we'll enjoy the sight of majestic snow-capped peaks, the intense blue sky, and the agricultural fields that paint the valley in varying shades of green and gold, depending on the season. This section of the route is a perfect opportunity to connect with nature, while the fresh, pure air of the high altitude fills us with energy.
Our final destination is the Maras Salt Mines , a network of over 3,000 salt pans dating back to pre-Incan times . These salt mines, located on the slopes of a mountain, have been worked for generations and are still managed by local communities. Upon arrival, we'll stop to explore this stunning white and pink landscape, where the salt is extracted using a traditional process that has remained virtually unchanged for centuries.
During the visit to the salt mines, we will be able to learn about the salt production process and the economic and cultural importance of this resource for the region. The view of the salt wells, staggered along the mountain and shining under the Andean sun, is a unique spectacle that is not easily forgotten.
This bicycle route from Moray to Maras will not only allow us to explore two of the most fascinating sites in the Sacred Valley, but will also offer us an immersive experience in the Andean landscapes, from the heights of Moray to the surprising scenery of the Salineras de Maras . It is a day full of discoveries, natural beauty and the rich cultural heritage that makes this valley such a special place.
Visit to the Lamay weavers and the Ale environmental project
Visit to the Lamay weavers and the Ale environmental project
Our visit to Lamay offers us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the lives of the local communities and discover the ancestral art of Andean weaving. We will begin the day by visiting the weavers of Lamay, talented women who have kept traditional weaving techniques alive for generations. These textiles are not only works of art but also hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Andean communities.
During our visit, we will observe these artisans working with alpaca and sheep wool yarns, using backstrap looms and techniques passed down from mother to daughter. Each piece is a reflection of their cultural identity, where colors and geometric designs tell stories about the Andean worldview, the relationship with Pachamama (Mother Earth), and the cycles of nature. Furthermore, the textiles represent a vital source of income for the families, as their sale allows rural communities to maintain their local economy and preserve their traditional way of life.
After the visit, we'll head to Villa Mágica, a charming retreat in the heart of the Sacred Valley, where we'll enjoy a delicious organic meal . The fresh, organic ingredients used in Villa Mágica's kitchen come from local farms, guaranteeing an authentic and sustainable culinary experience. Here, we'll savor dishes that celebrate the richness of Andean gastronomy, made with products like quinoa, corn, native potatoes, and fresh herbs, all prepared with a focus on health and respect for the environment.
In the afternoon we will visit Ale's environmental project . A unique seedbed in the world, with thousands of varieties, preserved with the aim of protecting them from extinction.
This day in Lamay will be an enriching experience, where we will connect deeply with the local culture, the importance of textiles as economic and cultural support, and the transformative power of solidarity and education in the lives of the children of the Sacred Valley.

Extra Activity: Trekking: The Inca Trail - Machu Picchu
For those who have added the Machu Picchu excursion to their Inca Trail trek, this is a unique experience that combines history, nature, and adventure. This approximately 6-hour route takes you along ancient Inca trails surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, leading to the majestic Sun Gate, or "Inti Punku," the original entrance to the citadel of Machu Picchu. As you approach the Sun Gate, the landscape transforms, and the panoramic view of Machu Picchu unfolds before your eyes , shrouded in a blanket of mist that gradually dissipates, revealing the grandeur of this wonder of the world.
Trekking is a challenging journey, but each step is rewarded with spectacular views of the Andes mountain range, green valleys and meandering rivers. The flora and fauna along the way are equally impressive, with wild orchids, exotic birds and, if you're lucky, the chance to spot llamas or vicuñas in their natural habitat.
After a day of hiking, we'll descend to the town of Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, where we'll spend the night. Aguas Calientes is a picturesque and welcoming town nestled at the foot of the mountains, surrounded by lush vegetation and bisected by the Urubamba River. The atmosphere is relaxed, with cobblestone streets and a vibrant array of restaurants, cafes, and artisan shops. It's the perfect place to unwind and recharge after the trek, enjoying a delicious dinner of traditional Peruvian dishes or a relaxing soak in the hot springs that give the town its name.
Those who have not booked the Machu Picchu extra activity will be able to enjoy two days of relaxation in Villa Mágica and participate in the activities of the Yanapay Village School .

Trekking to Huayna Picchu and visit to the citadel of Machu Picchu
For those who have added the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu extra activity, today we'll prepare to tackle one of the most incredible short hikes on the planet: the ascent of Huayna Picchu. This trek, though brief, is challenging and will reward us with unparalleled views. Huayna Picchu is the iconic mountain that looms behind the citadel in classic Machu Picchu photographs. The climb is steep and follows a narrow path of stone steps, some of which were built by the Incas themselves centuries ago. As we ascend, the path becomes narrower and more exhilarating, with sections that require considerable physical effort and a good sense of balance.
However, every effort is rewarded. Upon reaching the summit, we will be greeted by a 360-degree panoramic view of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley , a breathtaking spectacle that leaves a sense of awe difficult to describe. From this height, the citadel seems even more mystical, enveloped in the serenity and grandeur of the Andes.
After enjoying our time at the summit, we'll carefully descend to begin our detailed exploration of the Machu Picchu archaeological site . We'll walk through its ancient temples, plazas, agricultural terraces, and enclosures, learning about the history and mysteries of this place that was a major cultural, religious, and political center of the Inca Empire. Every corner of the citadel holds a piece of history, and exploring it is like traveling back in time, connecting with a civilization that left an indelible mark on world history.
After visiting Machu Picchu, we will return to Villa Mágica, taking with us indelible memories of one of the most fascinating days of our journey.
Those who have not booked the Machu Picchu extra activity will be able to enjoy two days of relaxation in Villa Mágica and participate in the activities of the Yanapay Village School .

Trekking: visit to the Mountain of Seven Colors and Show Cooking
A visit to Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca, is one of the most breathtaking experiences Peru has to offer. Located in the Andes Mountains at approximately 5,200 meters above sea level , this natural wonder is famous for its spectacular, hand-painted bands of color, a result of the rich mineral composition of the soil.
The hike to Rainbow Mountain is demanding due to the altitude , but the effort is rewarded with every step. As we ascend, the landscape transforms with each change of light and angle, revealing panoramas that seem straight out of a dream. Finally, upon reaching the summit, the view of Vinicunca takes our breath away. The mountain unfolds before us in a spectrum of colors ranging from deep red to yellow, passing through shades of green, blue, and violet . This natural palette is the result of the oxidation of various minerals over millions of years, creating a visual spectacle unlike any other in the world.
From the summit, in addition to the spectacular view of Rainbow Mountain, you can appreciate the majestic Andean landscape in every direction. The snow-capped peaks of Ausangate, the highest peak in the region, dominate the horizon, and the vastness of the Altiplano stretches as far as the eye can see, creating a profound sense of connection with nature.
After having enjoyed this natural spectacle, we will begin the descent with a feeling of achievement and amazement, carrying in our hearts the memory of a place that seems taken from another world. A visit to the Mountain of Seven Colors is undoubtedly one of the brightest jewels of Peru, an experience that leaves an indelible mark on those who are fortunate enough to witness it.
Before dinner, the Villa Mágica kitchen team will offer a cooking demonstration in which we can participate. Peruvian cuisine is considered one of the most varied and richest in the world, thanks to its pre-Incan and Incan heritage, as well as Spanish, African, Cantonese Chinese, Japanese, and Italian immigrants. It brings together and blends the gastronomy of four continents.
Coming home...
Coming home...
Returning home after a magical trip through the Sacred Valley of the Incas is a moment filled with emotion and unforgettable memories. As the plane takes off from Cusco and soars above the majestic Andes , a mixture of nostalgia and gratitude washes over us.
We will leave behind a place where history, culture and nature intertwine in a unique way, creating a journey that will touch our spirit.
Advantages of booking your event with BikeFriendly
Culture
The Sacred Valley of Lamay , in the Peruvian Andes, is a destination where history and tradition intertwine with spectacular landscapes. Cycling along its roads, you'll discover the essence of Quechua culture , a living legacy reflected in its communities, its crafts, and its ancestral language, still spoken by many families in the region.
You'll travel through Inca agricultural terraces, sacred temples, and villages that preserve their traditions , such as traditional textile art and farming methods inherited from their ancestors. With our journey , you'll not only explore one of Peru's most iconic valleys but also immerse yourself in the authentic Andean way of life.
Climate
The Sacred Valley of Lamay boasts an ideal climate for cycling for much of the year. Thanks to its altitude and geography, it offers pleasant temperatures and a combination of sunny days and cool mountain breezes.
The best time to cycle along its paths is during the dry season (April to October) , when clear skies offer spectacular views of the valleys and mountains. July is one of the coldest months of the year. Daytime temperatures typically reach highs of around 22°C, while nighttime lows drop to around 2°C. Rainfall is scarce during this month, characteristic of the region's dry season.
Gastronomy
Peruvian cuisine is recognized worldwide for its diversity and rich flavors, a result of the fusion of cultures and the country's vast biodiversity. Some of the most emblematic dishes you can savor include ceviche, considered Peru's national dish, and ají de gallina (chicken stew).
During dinner at Villa Mágica, we can savor authentic Peruvian vegetarian cuisine featuring seasonal local produce.
Land
The terrain we'll be cycling or trekking on presents no technical difficulties. In Peru, the most important thing to keep in mind is altitude sickness, or soroche , when engaging in physical activity.
Altitude sickness can affect you when you climb to altitudes of over 2.500 meters. Destinations like Cusco and the Sacred Valley are at altitudes of over 3.000 meters, and even Rainbow Mountain, we'll be at altitudes of over 5.000 meters.

REVIEWS
The work being done by Bicycles Without Borders and Bikefriendly is commendable and makes me think there is still hope in the world.
I've seen firsthand that this project is real and not just a gimmick. The idea is truly brilliant, and it's helping many children and adolescents continue their education in a very meaningful way, as it's not a charity, but a means for the local population to develop.
The immersive experience in the country is complete, and traveling around the country by bike helps us feel fully integrated into the environment. In just one week, we've been able to understand and learn a lot about this country and its wonderful people, who are materially poor but spiritually rich.
I take my hat off to the work done by both the guide Sergio and the local team, which included Alpha, my lifelong friend and very professional, as well as Idi, Maurice, and Sidy.
I will definitely recommend this trip.
I recommend it, the routes exceeded my expectations! The hotels were good and the food was very good.
