Gravel bike trip through Tenerife, at the foot of Mount Teide

Tenerife is one of the best destinations in Europe for gravel cycling. An island where the Atlantic Ocean and the volcanic origin of the land have created a unique setting for pedaling along dirt tracks, secondary roads, and constantly changing landscapes.

In the heart of the island rises the majestic Mount Teide , the star of this trip. At its base, we'll explore the breathtaking Cañadas, a vast volcanic landscape that contrasts sharply with the lush forests of Anaga , the deep ravines of the Teno massif , and the sun-drenched southern slopes. In just a few kilometers, you'll go from riding among lava flows to cycling under the shade of the laurel forest or with the Atlantic Ocean always in view.

Thanks to its privileged climate and over 300 days of sunshine a year, Tenerife offers exceptional conditions for cycling in any season. Known as the island of eternal spring, it allows you to enjoy gravel riding in winter, spring, summer, or autumn, making it a perfect destination for those looking to keep cycling all year round.

But this trip goes far beyond cycling. You'll discover historic cities like La Laguna , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, charming towns like La Orotava , traditional Canarian cuisine, and the distinctive volcanic wines that are part of the island's identity.

The routes have been designed to offer an authentic gravel experience, combining tracks, volcanic trails, and quiet roads. Elevation gain will be a key feature, with physically demanding but technically accessible routes for cyclists accustomed to medium and long-distance rides.

As with all Bikefriendly trips, we take care of all the arrangements so you can simply enjoy every pedal stroke. You'll have expert guides, a support vehicle, luggage transport, refreshments along the routes, and accommodations selected for cyclists, offering you the peace of mind and security of traveling with an agency specializing in bicycle tours.

In just a few kilometers, we'll travel from the lush greenery of the north to the sun-drenched volcanic landscapes of the south—a contrast that will accompany us throughout the trip.

Once at the hotel, we will check in , hand over the bicycles (for those who have booked the rental service) and the welcome briefing, where we will meet the group and review the route, the stages and all the necessary details to enjoy the experience with complete peace of mind.

Stage 1 · First contact with gravel at the foot of Teide

Stage 1 · First contact with gravel at the foot of Teide

We begin our gravel bike journey through Tenerife with a stage that perfectly summarizes the essence of the island: volcanic landscapes, elevation changes and spectacular views of the Atlantic.

We'll depart from El Médano , one of the most distinctive coastal towns in southern Tenerife, to begin exploring the slopes of the island's star attraction: Mount Teide . It will be the perfect day to familiarize ourselves with the terrain and discover the first volcanic tracks and secondary roads that characterize gravel riding in the Canary Islands.

Depending on the group's level and the weather conditions, we propose two route options.

The first route runs along quiet roads that gradually ascend, allowing you to enjoy the volcanic landscape and adapt to the pace of the journey without great technical demands.

For those seeking a greater challenge, the second option takes us high into the mountains, exceeding 2.000 meters in altitude . We'll ride along breathtaking volcanic tracks, with Mount Teide always in view, and enjoy unique panoramic views of the ocean and the sea of clouds that make this stage an unforgettable experience.

Both routes end in San Cristóbal de La Laguna , a city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, where we can stroll through its historic center and recover our strength by enjoying the local cuisine.

A first stage designed to discover why Tenerife is one of the great gravel destinations in Europe and to start the journey with an authentic immersion in the volcanic nature of the island.

Stage 2 · Gravel through Anaga: ancient forests, mountains and ocean

Stage 2 · Gravel through Anaga: ancient forests, mountains and ocean

The second day of this gravel bike trip around Tenerife takes us to discover one of the island's most spectacular natural areas: the Anaga Peninsula . A circular stage that combines coast, mountains, and unspoiled nature, traversing one of the best gravel riding landscapes in the Canary Islands.

We left San Cristóbal de La Laguna heading towards Santa Cruz de Tenerife , where the landscape begins to open up towards the Atlantic Ocean. After passing through the capital, we reached Las Teresitas Beach , the point where we left the coastal atmosphere behind to enter the impressive Anaga Rural Park.

From here, the scenery changes completely. The tracks and roads wind their way through ravines, ridges, and mountains covered in laurel forest, an ancient woodland considered one of the best-preserved ecosystems in Europe. The humidity, the mist, and the lush vegetation create a unique atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the volcanic landscapes explored the day before.

The route alternates between mountain roads and tracks ideal for gravel, with constant climbs and a very entertaining layout that rewards every effort with spectacular views over the Atlantic, small hamlets hidden among the mountains and viewpoints from which to contemplate one of the wildest corners of Tenerife.

Cycling through Anaga means exploring a territory where nature still reigns supreme. Its isolation, tranquility, and the extraordinary beauty of its landscapes make this stage one of the most memorable experiences of the trip.

At the end of the tour we will return to La Laguna , where we can rest and enjoy the atmosphere of one of the most charming cities in the Canary Islands.

If the first stage revealed to us the power of the volcanic landscape, today we will discover the greener, wetter and more ancient side of Tenerife, confirming why this island is one of the most complete gravel destinations in Europe.

Stage 3 · The north of Tenerife: tradition, nature and charming roads

Stage 3 · The north of Tenerife: tradition, nature and charming roads

The third stage of our gravel bike trip through Tenerife takes us to discover the most authentic side of the island's north. A more relaxed day than the previous ones, perfect for enjoying the scenery, getting to know the local culture, and continuing our journey towards the heart of Tenerife.

We set off from San Cristóbal de La Laguna heading west, traveling along quiet secondary roads that cross a territory marked by the influence of the trade winds. Here the landscape changes again: the vegetation becomes more lush, the forests take center stage, and green characterizes every kilometer of the route.

During this stage, we will pass through small towns and rural areas where agriculture, traditional architecture, and the unhurried pace of Canarian life remain integral to the landscape. It's an opportunity to discover a lesser-known Tenerife, far removed from the main tourist areas and deeply connected to its roots.

Due to ongoing recovery efforts following the recent wildfires, some roads in the north remain closed. Therefore, part of the route follows lightly trafficked paved roads, an alternative that preserves the scenic beauty of the route and ensures a safe and enjoyable cycling experience.

As we approach the Orotava Valley , the landscape once again surprises. The Atlantic Ocean and the silhouette of Mount Teide dominate the horizon, offering one of the most iconic panoramas on the island.

The stage ends in La Orotava , one of Tenerife's most beautiful historic towns. Its cobbled streets, wooden balconies, and traditional Canarian architecture make the end of the day the perfect time to stroll, soak up the local atmosphere, and recharge before tackling the high mountain stages.

A day that demonstrates that Tenerife not only surprises with its volcanoes, but also with the richness of its landscapes, its heritage and the authenticity of its villages.

Stage 4 · Between pine forests and volcanoes, heading west of Tenerife

Stage 4 · Between pine forests and volcanoes, heading west of Tenerife

The fourth stage of this gravel bike trip around Tenerife takes us back into the mountains. A varied day in which we'll leave behind the green Orotava Valley and head towards the west of the island, always with the imposing silhouette of Mount Teide accompanying us on the horizon.

We left La Orotava on quiet secondary roads that allowed us to gradually gain altitude as the landscape around us changed. Little by little, we left behind the cultivated fields and inhabited areas to enter an increasingly natural and open environment.

As in the previous stage, some forest tracks remain closed due to recovery work following the fires of recent years. Therefore, in certain sections we will use lightly trafficked local roads, an alternative that maintains the appeal of the route and allows us to continue enjoying this stunning environment.

As we climb, we enter the vast Canary pine forests , one of Tenerife's most characteristic ecosystems. The temperature becomes more pleasant, the air fresher, and the trails invite us to fully enjoy gravel riding while magnificent panoramic views of the island and Mount Teide unfold.

The second part of the stage brings back the prominence of the tracks and paths, offering a very entertaining route that combines elevation gain, nature and the feeling of moving through an authentic and little-traveled territory.

We will end the day in Santiago del Teide , a quiet town surrounded by mountains that will be the perfect prelude to discovering, in the following stages, the wildest and most spectacular side of western Tenerife.

A stage that combines effort, landscapes and nature, showing once again the extraordinary diversity that makes Tenerife a unique destination for gravel cycling.

Stage 5 · The wildest side of Tenerife: Teno, Masca and the Cliffs of Los Gigantes

Stage 5 · The wildest side of Tenerife: Teno, Masca and the Cliffs of Los Gigantes

The fifth stage will take us to discover the westernmost tip of Tenerife, one of the island's most spectacular and wild areas. A circular route from Santiago del Teide that combines mountains, ocean, and some of the most breathtaking roads in the Canary Islands.

From the start, we'll venture into the Teno Massif , a stunning natural area where the landscape transforms completely. Deep ravines, craggy mountains, and cliffs plunging into the Atlantic will accompany a day marked by the feeling of cycling through a remote and virtually untouched territory.

The route alternates between mountain roads, tracks, and trails, making this stage one of the most complete of the trip. The constant ups and downs, along with the varied terrain, offer a true gravel experience and require maintaining a steady pace throughout the day.

Upon reaching the north coast, those who wish can take a detour to the Punta de Teno lighthouse , one of Tenerife's most iconic spots. From this privileged viewpoint, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Los Gigantes Cliffs and the vast Atlantic Ocean.

The day's biggest challenge comes on the return journey inland with the climb to Masca , considered one of the most spectacular roads in Spain. Its hairpin bends, deep ravines, and breathtaking panoramic views make this mountain pass one of those places every cyclist remembers forever.

After completing the ascent we will return to Santiago del Teide , bringing to an end an intense and very varied stage that brings together some of the most impressive landscapes on the island.

A day where the effort is rewarded every kilometer and which confirms why Tenerife is one of the great European destinations to enjoy gravel cycling.

Stage 6 · The queen stage: the great challenge of Teide

Stage 6 · The queen stage: the great challenge of Teide

We've reached the queen stage of this gravel bike trip through Tenerife. An unforgettable day that culminates with the ascent to Teide National Park , one of the most spectacular cycling landscapes in Europe and the perfect ending to this adventure on two wheels.

We set off from Santiago del Teide to tackle a long climb that will take us to Las Cañadas del Teide . As we gain altitude, the landscape changes constantly, passing through different ecosystems until we reach the high mountains, where the volcanic origin of the island is displayed in all its splendor.

Above 2.000 meters in altitude, a unique landscape awaits. Lava flows, rock formations, and an immense volcanic amphitheater surround the silhouette of Mount Teide, creating a setting of indescribable beauty that has served as the backdrop for numerous film productions.

Cycling through Las Cañadas is a unique experience. The silence, the vastness of the landscape, and the constant presence of Mount Teide make this stage one of the highlights of the trip. During the ride, we'll stop at the Parador Nacional del Teide , an ideal place to recharge before tackling the long descent.

From here we'll begin a spectacular descent to the south of the island. Gradually the landscape will transform once again, leaving the high mountains behind and returning to warmer areas, where the Atlantic Ocean will accompany us until the end of the route.

The stage concludes in El Médano , completing the circular route around Mount Teide and providing the perfect ending to this gravel trip around Tenerife. After days exploring volcanoes, forests, ravines, and the Atlantic coast, there's no better reward than celebrating the end of the adventure with a well-deserved swim in the sea.

A demanding and spectacular final day that sums up the essence of Tenerife and makes this trip an experience that will remain forever in the memory of any gravel lover.

The end of the trip

Day 7 · End of trip

After breakfast at the hotel, we will transfer you to Tenerife North Airport – Ciudad de La Laguna , where this gravel bike tour of Tenerife will conclude. If your flight departs from Tenerife South Airport – Reina Sofía , please let us know so we can arrange your transfer.

The time has come to say goodbye after a week exploring some of the island's most spectacular landscapes: volcanoes, ancient forests, ravines, Atlantic coasts and unforgettable roads that make Tenerife one of the great European destinations for gravel cycling.

We'll leave with much more than just kilometers covered. We'll take with us the experience of having discovered the island in a different way, sharing routes, challenges, and moments that will remain forever in our memories.

This gravel trip around Tenerife is much more than just a cycling adventure. It's an opportunity to discover the essence of a unique island, where volcanic landscapes, history, and traditions are part of every stage.

The experience is rounded out by the excellent Canarian cuisine. After each day, we can sample specialties such as wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce, fresh Atlantic fish, local meats, and volcanic wines with Designation of Origin, which reflect the character and personality of this region.

A gravel trip that combines sport, nature, culture and gastronomy to discover Tenerife in a different, authentic and unforgettable way.

Climate

A perfect climate to enjoy gravel riding all year round

Tenerife is one of Europe's best destinations for gravel cycling at any time of year. Its mild and stable climate, with pleasant temperatures throughout the four seasons, has earned it the nickname " the island of eternal spring ," making it an ideal place for cycling trips in both winter and summer.

Thanks to its location in the Atlantic and the influence of the trade winds, the island enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year, with mild winters and moderate summers that allow for comfortable cycling practically any day.

One of Tenerife's greatest attractions is the variety of landscapes and microclimates it offers. In a single day, you can ride volcanic tracks under clear skies in the south and, just a few kilometers later, venture into the lush forests of the north, in areas like Anaga or the Orotava Valley . This diversity makes each stage a unique experience and makes gravel biking the best way to discover the island.

At higher altitudes, especially around Teide National Park , temperatures can drop, particularly during winter or early in the morning. Therefore, it is advisable to wear appropriate clothing to adapt to the temperature changes typical of high mountain environments.

Whatever the season, Tenerife offers exceptional conditions for enjoying gravel cycling, combining good weather, unique landscapes and a network of tracks and roads that make every ride an unforgettable experience.

Gastronomy

Tenerife's gastronomy, the perfect ending to every stage

Gastronomy is an integral part of the Tenerife gravel cycling experience. After each day on the bike, it's time to discover the flavors of an island where tradition, local produce, and Canarian cuisine take center stage.

During the trip you can taste renowned specialties such as wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce , fresh Atlantic fish, local meats, artisanal cheeses and other products that reflect the gastronomic richness of Tenerife.

Volcanic wines deserve special mention. Grown in volcanic soils and produced by wineries with a long tradition, they stand out for their unique character and are the perfect accompaniment to discovering another of the island's great treasures.

Each meal will be an opportunity to regain strength, share experiences from cycling, and continue discovering Tenerife through its culture and gastronomy.

Because a great cycling trip isn't just about enjoying the pedaling, it's also about savoring the experience.

Land

A varied, demanding and spectacular gravel route

This gravel trip around Tenerife has been designed to offer a complete experience, combining a wide variety of terrains and some of the most spectacular landscapes on the island.

Throughout the stages, we'll alternate between dirt tracks, volcanic paths, and quiet secondary roads , always striving for a balance between fun, safety, and the beauty of the surroundings. The terrain is generally firm and smooth, with sections of volcanic origin that add that touch of adventure characteristic of gravel riding, without requiring a high level of technical skill.

Tenerife's topography makes elevation changes one of the main features of the trip. You'll find constant climbs, long ascents, and descents that allow you to fully enjoy cycling, making it an experience especially suited to cyclists accustomed to medium and long-distance routes.

In some areas of the north of the island, certain tracks may be temporarily replaced by paved roads due to environmental recovery work following the fires of recent years. These minor modifications do not alter the essence of the route and allow you to continue enjoying some of Tenerife's most breathtaking scenery.

A trip designed to experience gravel in its purest form, discovering the island through little-traveled roads, volcanic nature and an extraordinary variety of landscapes that make Tenerife one of the great European destinations for this sport.

The trip to Senegal was an extraordinary, immersive experience. It allowed you to experience the country firsthand, interacting with and meeting its people. The local guides were very friendly and truly professional. If you're willing to endure the discomforts of deep Africa, this is a highly recommended trip.
This solidarity trip to Senegal has exceeded my expectations.
The work being done by Bicycles Without Borders and Bikefriendly is commendable and makes me think there is still hope in the world.
I've seen firsthand that this project is real and not just a gimmick. The idea is truly brilliant, and it's helping many children and adolescents continue their education in a very meaningful way, as it's not a charity, but a means for the local population to develop.
The immersive experience in the country is complete, and traveling around the country by bike helps us feel fully integrated into the environment. In just one week, we've been able to understand and learn a lot about this country and its wonderful people, who are materially poor but spiritually rich.
I take my hat off to the work done by both the guide Sergio and the local team, which included Alpha, my lifelong friend and very professional, as well as Idi, Maurice, and Sidy.
I will definitely recommend this trip.
Senegal, a trip that touches your heart and soul and makes you reflect. Sports, experiences, culture, solidarity, and many other things you only experience when you're there. Sergio, our guide, was unbeatable. Always calm and poised, he conveyed his passion for cycling and introduced us to Senegalese culture. The management and service provided by Bikefriendly were brilliant from the start. We will travel with you again without hesitation.

FAQ

I have allergies or intolerances. Can you adapt the menus?
Yes, of course, at the end of the reservation, we will contact you and send you a form with some relevant questions: contact in case of emergency, allergies and intolerances, medical problems... The menus and supplies will always be adapted to your needs.
The best thing is that you always carry what you are used to taking: your salts, your bars... To avoid any downturn and so that you can eat and drink on the route whenever you need it. The refreshment stations will be marked at specific points and there you can eat, refill the bottle, have a soft drink, fruit...
As it is a self-guided trip, we will send the route tracks so that you can load them on your GPS device, or App that you use. Normally they ride in groups to the foot of the passes, where everyone ascends at their own pace. At the aid stations and stops, they regroup again.
You sign up for a trip where most of you don't know each other. We will propose a room layout to share with another person, but you are free to modify it.
