Trip Summary

The Great Zangskar Trek in the Himalayas

Ladakh , known as the little tibet, was for centuries the last kingdom under the Tibetan influence to be discovered. This enigmatic destination, full of legends, magicians and mystics, was protected by the imposing mountain ranges of the Himalayas, remaining isolated until the 90s, when it began to open to tourism with the arrival of the first European mountaineers.

Being under the sovereignty of the India, Ladakh has managed to preserve its Buddhist religion and its rich ancestral culture, just as it did for centuries. In its glacial valleys, life develops in an admirable balance, where the inhabitants deeply respect their environment, facing the harsh conditions of this ecosystem of high mountain desert. This respect for nature is deeply influenced by the buddhism, a religion based on love and compassion towards all living beings, creating a unique harmony between culture and nature that is difficult to find anywhere else in the world.

The villages of Ladakh They seem frozen in time, with agricultural practices typical of the Middle Ages and dominated by impressive Buddhist monasteries that evoke the stories of the first explorers who dared to cross the monumental mountain ranges of Himalayas.

Travelling to Ladakh is much more than just a destination: it is immersing yourself in a world of legends, spirituality and dreamlike landscapes. This extraordinary place combines the traditions of ancient religions with the majestic peaks and glaciers of the Himalayas, offering an unforgettable experience that will remain etched in your memory forever.

I've lived in the Benasque Valley for 26 years, and since I was 21, I've been traveling anywhere in the world where I can find some kind of adventure, whether climbing, mountaineering, exploring by bike, or simply visiting countries always off the beaten path. I've spent many summers in Ladakh, the Indian Himalayas, where I've also worked for twelve summers guiding treks, six-thousanders, and mountain biking and bikepacking trips.

Trip description

9-day MTB adventure in Ladakh, exploring little Tibet

This 9-day MTB trip through Ladakh It is much more than a route; it is an immersion in the essence of Himalayas, where culture, nature and spirituality intertwine. Known as el little tibetLadakh offers an incomparable landscape of imposing mountains, silent valleys and picturesque villages that seem trapped in time. Every pedal stroke will be a discovery, every night under the stars a deeper connection with this magical place.

Physical training

It is a trip that requires medium-high physical preparation, both due to the distances and gradients, as well as the altitude at which the entire trip takes place.

A journey through ancient landscapes and cultures

From the first moment in Leh, the capital of Ladakh, you will find yourself surrounded by spectacular surroundings. Located at an altitude of more than 3.500 metres, this city is the starting point to acclimatise and begin exploring the region. Here you can visit colourful markets, Buddhist monasteries such as the famous Shanti Stupa, and delight in the views of the snow-capped peaks.

As the tour progresses, we will pedal along paths that wind between imposing mountains, passing traditional villages of white houses with flat roofs, where the rhythms of life seem to have stopped. The local people, always friendly and hospitable, will welcome us with smiles, and you will have the opportunity to observe how they cultivate their fields using ancient farming techniques.

Along the way, we will visit iconic Buddhist monasteries that tell centuries of history. These monasteries, nestled in otherworldly landscapes, are true treasures of Tibetan architecture and spirituality. Among them are Lamayuru, known as the oldest monastery in Ladakh, and Phuktal, a monastery built in a cave that seems to defy gravity. At each stop, the silence and calm of these places will envelop you, offering you unique moments of introspection and spiritual connection.

The majesty of the mountains and the tranquility of nature

Ladakh is known for its unspoiled nature. During the treks, you will cycle through landscapes ranging from glacial valleys and crystal-clear rivers to arid high mountain terrain, known as the Himalayan Desert. Panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and glaciers will accompany you throughout the journey, as we cross some of the most spectacular mountain passes in the world.

The silence here is unique, a complete contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern life. This is a place where you can only hear the sound of the wind, the creaking of wheels on the road and the murmur of rivers flowing down from the glaciers. The tranquillity and immensity of these landscapes are the perfect setting to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature.

Camping under the stars and the comfort of a support car

Every day, at the end of the stage, we will camp in carefully chosen places, where the organization will have rented the villagers a space. The tents will be your refuge in this remote environment, allowing you to rest under an incredibly starry sky, free of light pollution. Our team will take care of everything necessary for your comfort: the support car will carry the camping material, luggage and food, while a cook will prepare delicious hot meals for the group each day.

Abran - Zulidok (Rangdum)

After another night under a completely clear sky—Ladakh boasts one of the purest atmospheres on the planet, free from light pollution and protected from the southern haze by the Himalayan barrier—we will begin the day ascending towards the last port of the route.

El Pensi LaWith its 4.400 meters And inhabited only in the summer months by nomadic shepherds of yaks and goats, it should not pose a great difficulty for us: during the previous stage we will have already been gradually gaining the meters that separate us from its summit.

On the descent, one of Ladakh's great geological gems awaits us: the Drang-Drung glacier, an ice giant that stretches along 23 kilometers and that will accompany us for a good part of the descent.

We will continue descending, surrounded by colossal mountains, advancing parallel to the river that originates from the glacier itself, until we reach a new and immense glacial plain. There, in an environment inhabited only by the monks of the enigmatic Rangdum MonasteryWe will venture into a valley of green pastures that seems suspended in time.

At the end of the day, the camp tents will be waiting for us, where we will enjoy another night in this virtually untouched paradise, a place that invites you to take a deep breath and let yourself be embraced by the silent grandeur of the Himalayas.

Zulidok - Sankoo

Today will be special for three reasons that make it one of the most memorable days of the trip.
Firstly, we will cross a true “cultural border”We will leave the Buddhist world behind to delve into the Islamic world, at the same time that it completely changes climate system.
We will move on from the cold and arid mountains of Ladakh al Suru ValleyIt will be more humid and slightly warmer. The sensation will be that of entering the KarakorumAnd it won't be by chance: the border with Pakistan, closed for years, is just a few kilometers away.

During the tour we will cycle under the imposing presence of the peaks Nun and Kun, both above the 7.000 meterswith its glaciers hanging like tongues of ice over the villages. And all this, moreover, in a stage that unfolds practically downhillA reward after days at altitude. What more could you ask for?

The day will end in Sankoo, a welcoming village of farmers and shepherds that always greets the traveler with sincere greetings and smiles.
Unfortunately, it will also be our last night in a tent In this remote paradise, far from the tourist circuits, where every moment seems to belong to another time.

Sankoo-kargil (and taxi to Leh)

Last day of cycling! We only have a few more ahead of us. an easy 40 km of paved road to Kargilwhich we will cover in about two hours. It is a comfortable stretch, in which we will leave the Suru valley behind while more and more towns appear along the way, until we reach the town where our transport back to Leh awaits.

But this isn't just a transfer back to the hotel: it's another journey in itselfThis time, seated and effortless, crossing mountain passes, gorges sculpted by mighty rivers and monasteries that defy gravitysuspended in impossible places. As we advance, we will gradually return to Buddhist worldclosing the cultural circle that has marked this entire adventure.

In the afternoon we will arrive at Lehwhere we will rediscover the "luxury" of a hotel room, restaurants and shops... a smooth transition back to the everyday world after days in a natural setting that is hard to leave behind.

Another alternative is to explore at your leisure. Leh and its surroundingsvisiting their urban monasteries, the Royal PalaceThe traditional markets and viewpoints offer panoramic views of the city and the Himalayan peaks. Culture

Travel to Himalayas It is much more than hiking in the mountains: it is venturing into one of the regions with the greatest spiritual richness on the planet. Ladakh , known as the Little Tibet, it preserves intact the essence of Tibetan BuddhismA thousand-year-old tradition that continues to shape the daily lives of its inhabitants. During the trip you will have the opportunity to discover legendary Buddhist monasteries of the Indus Valley, centuries-old temples located in impossible enclaves and communities that keep alive ancestral ceremonies, songs and rituals.

The culture in Ladakh is deeply spiritual, hospitable and linked to natureLife at high altitude, coexistence with the cold desert, and the historical influence of Tibet have shaped a unique identity, where the following stand out: gonpas (monasteries), the thangka (sacred paintings), prayer mills and religious festivities with traditional dances.

Along the route we also passed through populated areas Shiite MuslimEspecially in the Suru Valley, this trip becomes an exceptional intercultural experience: in just a few days we experience the contrast between the Buddhist world and the Islamic world, two realities that coexist in harmony in one of the most impressive environments on the planet.

This trip is a unique opportunity to to understand the cultural essence of the Himalayas, connect with its people, discover its history and open your eyes to ways of life deeply linked to spirituality, the mountains and respect for the land.

Environment/Atmosphere

El climate in Ladakh and the Himalayas It is defined by its extreme altitude and by being located in the northern slope of the mountain range, an area known as cold Himalayan desertThis means that summers are dry, sunny and stableWhile nights can be cold even in the warmest months. Traveling to Ladakh between june and september It is ideal, as it is the time with the best conditions for exploring its valleys and mountain passes.

During the journey we will find clear skiesVery low humidity and intense sunshine characteristic of high mountain areas. Throughout the day, temperatures typically range between 15 °C and 25 °Calthough in high areas they can drop below 5 ° C at dawn or dusk. Solar radiation is strong due to the altitude, so adequate protection is essential.

In the Indus Valley and Buddhist areas of Ladakh, a climate predominates drier and fresher, while as you descend towards the Suru valley the atmosphere becomes slightly more humid and warm, with a greater presence of vegetation and contrasting landscapes.

The region remains virtually isolated during the winter due to heavy snowfall, making summer the only viable time to safely cycle through the Himalayas.

The Himalayan climate, combined with the altitude and landscape, creates a unique environment for adventure: Bright days, starry nights, and a clear atmosphere which allows you to enjoy spectacular views of peaks over 7.000 meters high.

Gastronomy

La gastronomy of Ladakh and the Himalayas It's a direct reflection of life in the high mountains: simple, nourishing, and deeply connected to Tibetan tradition. The local cuisine combines ancestral recipes, locally sourced products, and aromas that speak of a culture shaped by the extreme climate and spirituality. During your trip, you'll discover unique flavors that are part of this region's identity.

Among the most characteristic dishes are the famous Tibetan momos (empanadas filled with vegetables or meat), the thukpas (hot noodle soups, perfect for regaining energy after a day at altitude) and the skyúA traditional ladakhi stew made with handmade noodles, vegetables, and local spices. Another must-try is the dal bat, a hearty dish based on lentils, rice and vegetables, also very common in the Indian Himalayas.

Drinks play an important role in the local culture: from the tea with salted butter (butter tea), very energetic and perfect for combating the cold, even the chai masala Spiced food, which accompanies daily life in monasteries and homes. In the most fertile valleys you will also find agricultural products such as apricots, apples and traditionally grown vegetables.

Despite being a remote region, Himalayan cuisine offers an authentic and surprisingly varied experience, where every meal becomes an opportunity to Connect with Ladakhis traditionsDiscover new flavors and understand how the local population adapts to life at altitude through their cuisine.

Land

El Himalayan terrain in Ladakh and Tibet It is as spectacular as it is challenging. Throughout the journey we will cycle through a unique landscape formed by compacted dirt tracks, traditional trails, stony sections and high mountain roads connecting small valleys and remote villages. The terrain combines fast, flowing sections with more technical ones, typical of the Mountain biking at altitudeoffering an authentic experience for adventure lovers.

On the northern slopes of the Himalayas, the predominant features are high-altitude desert landscapeswith large reddish mountains, deep gorges, and glacial plains that form part of the natural terrain of Indian HimalayasHere, the lack of vegetation allows for expansive views and wide-open paths. As we approach the Suru Valley, the terrain becomes wetter, greener and mountainousgiving rise to paths surrounded by pastures and farming villages.

The stages combine wide and comfortable tracksThe route includes traditional paths used by local communities, and some more demanding sections due to altitude or the presence of rocks. While not overly technical, it does require a good level of fitness, as the high mountain terrain and Himalayan passes add a unique physical and emotional challenge.

This remote and wild environment makes every day an opportunity to enjoy the authentic adventure cycling in the Himalayas, pedaling between peaks of more than 7.000 meters, imposing glaciers and practically untouched valleys.

This solidarity trip to Senegal has exceeded my expectations.
The work being done by Bicycles Without Borders and Bikefriendly is commendable and makes me think there is still hope in the world.
I've seen firsthand that this project is real and not just a gimmick. The idea is truly brilliant, and it's helping many children and adolescents continue their education in a very meaningful way, as it's not a charity, but a means for the local population to develop.
The immersive experience in the country is complete, and traveling around the country by bike helps us feel fully integrated into the environment. In just one week, we've been able to understand and learn a lot about this country and its wonderful people, who are materially poor but spiritually rich.
I take my hat off to the work done by both the guide Sergio and the local team, which included Alpha, my lifelong friend and very professional, as well as Idi, Maurice, and Sidy.
I will definitely recommend this trip.

Required Documentation
Passport with more than 6 months validity required. Visa is required to enter the country.
Hypoxia is the name given to the lack of oxygen in the human body and is the main cause of altitude sickness or soroche. Since atmospheric pressure decreases with higher altitude and less oxygen and nitrogen, the alveoli of the lungs cannot transport as much oxygen to the blood, which can cause dehydration and discomfort. There are people who are more susceptible than others and there are also factors such as physical activity, the speed of the ascent or the initial height from which you start. Therefore, when talking about altitude sickness, it is very important to know what symptoms we can feel, how to prevent it and how to combat it. What are the symptoms of altitude sickness? In most cases, the symptoms of altitude sickness are temporary and reduce as the person acclimatizes to the altitude. In general, the symptoms of altitude sickness usually appear when ascending from a low altitude to places above 2.000 meters above sea level suddenly. Furthermore, those people who are used to living below 900 meters usually notice symptoms a few hours after reaching high altitude corners, especially at night. In general, the symptoms of altitude sickness are: Dizziness or vomiting Weakness or tiredness Headache Lack of appetite Nervousness or labored breathing Sleep disorders: drowsiness, insomnia or episodes of sudden nocturnal dyspnea, that is, waking up suddenly with a feeling of drowning. If you are at high altitude, there may be cases of swelling in the hands, feet and face, increased heart rate or difficulty seeing or walking. How to prevent altitude sickness? A good way to prevent altitude sickness is to stay hydrated by drinking at least 4 or 5 liters of water a day and maintain a varied diet rich in carbohydrates. It is advisable to avoid alcohol and tobacco and eat light meals, preferably foods rich in carbohydrates and sugars (cereals and fruits). You should start hydrating yourself a week before the trip by drinking between 2 and 3 liters of water a day. Another golden rule to prevent altitude sickness is to rest. Sleep at least 8 hours and do not try to make great physical efforts. A natural remedy that populations like Peruvians have been using for centuries are coca leaves. You can drink them in mate (tea) during breakfast or dinner, in candies or directly by chewing them or leaving them on the side of your mouth until all their juice is secreted. In the supply car during the routes we will carry oxygen and a first aid kit. As for pills for altitude sickness, there are those who use them as a preventive or first aid measure, but they should never be a substitute for medical care. What's more, sometimes these pills can mask the symptoms of mountain sickness and give the mountaineer a false sense of security. There is a saying that goes: “Drink before you are thirsty, eat before you are hungry, dress warmly before you are cold, and rest before you are exhausted.”

This is a trip where we will use the bike during all stages, a medium-high level and preparation is required. It is about enjoying, getting to know this area, the country, its people and its culture. We will stop as many times as necessary to take photos, interact with people and rest to regain strength. The altitude will make the activity on the bike more difficult, but we will take it easy.
