Culture

This bike trip through the Cantabrian Mountains is also a tour of the tradition and rural life in northern SpainAlong the route, you'll discover charming villages like Cervera de Pisuerga, Velilla del Río Carrión, and Camasobres, where the stone architecture and hospitality typical of mountain communities are still preserved.

The culture of the area is deeply linked to the nature, livestock and the mountains, reflected in its customs, its slow pace and, of course, its cuisine. In each province you will find flavors that are part of its identity: the mountain stews from Cantabriacheeses from the Leonese mountains to sausages from Palencia, authentic and powerful, ideal after a day of pedaling.

A journey that will allow you not only to conquer legendary ports, but also to experience the cultural essence of northern Spain, with its unique people, traditions and flavors.

Weather

The climate in the Cantabrian Mountains is marked by the Atlantic influence and altitude, making it a perfect environment for road cycling.

Summers are mild, with temperatures rarely exceeding 25°C, ideal for tackling long climbs without the oppressive heat. In spring and autumn, the weather is variable, with cool mornings, changeable skies, and the possibility of rain, but also with spectacular green landscapes.

At higher elevations, such as the San Glorio and Piedrasluengas passes, temperatures drop several degrees compared to the valleys, so it's a good idea to wear appropriate clothing for the changing weather. Winter brings intense cold and snow, making the coldest months not recommended for cycling in this area.

In general, the best time to enjoy this cycling trip is from May to October, when the combination of mild temperatures and mountain landscapes at their most splendid make every day an unforgettable experience.

Gastronomy

The Cantabrian Mountains are a destination that can be enjoyed both on a bicycle and at the table. Its traditional gastronomy reflects mountain life: hearty dishes, made with local products and designed to recharge your batteries after a day of pedaling.

In Cantabria, the mountain stews and casseroles are the stars, accompanied by artisan cheeses and sobaos pasiegos as a sweet touch. In the mountains of León, the most notable dishes are Valdeón cheeses, cured meats and stews with legumes, perfect for the high mountain climate. In Palencia, the homemade sausagesGrill and the legumes of the land add flavor to rural tradition.

Throughout the journey, you'll enjoy authentic, simple cuisine full of character, always accompanied by the hospitality of the mountain villages. An experience that turns each stage of the journey into an opportunity to discover the cultural identity of northern Spain through its flavors.

Land

The terrain in the Cantabrian Mountains is made for cyclists looking for mountain challenges in their purest formThe routes run through secondary and well-paved roads, with very little traffic, which cross lonely valleys, lush forests and high mountain landscapes.

The climbs are long and demanding, with ports such as San Glorio, Piedrasluengas, Panderruedas or Pandetrave, which combine steady slopes with steep ramps that will test your legs. The descents are technical and spectacular, full of curves that are just as enjoyable as the climbs.

The terrain alternates high mountain areas with gentler stretches in the valleys, adding variety to each stage. The feeling of isolation and tranquility is one of the main attractions: you'll pedal along roads where only the wild nature of the mountain range will accompany you.

In short, a land tough, varied and authentic, which turns every day into a sporting challenge and every summit into an unforgettable reward.

The trip to Senegal was an extraordinary, immersive experience. It allowed you to experience the country firsthand, interacting with and meeting its people. The local guides were very friendly and truly professional. If you're willing to endure the discomforts of deep Africa, this is a highly recommended trip.

This solidarity trip to Senegal has exceeded my expectations.
The work being done by Bicycles Without Borders and Bikefriendly is commendable and makes me think there is still hope in the world.
I've seen firsthand that this project is real and not just a gimmick. The idea is truly brilliant, and it's helping many children and adolescents continue their education in a very meaningful way, as it's not a charity, but a means for the local population to develop.
The immersive experience in the country is complete, and traveling around the country by bike helps us feel fully integrated into the environment. In just one week, we've been able to understand and learn a lot about this country and its wonderful people, who are materially poor but spiritually rich.
I take my hat off to the work done by both the guide Sergio and the local team, which included Alpha, my lifelong friend and very professional, as well as Idi, Maurice, and Sidy.
I will definitely recommend this trip.
