Tips for tackling nighttime mountain biking routes

Enjoying a nighttime mountain bike ride is quite an experience, but we need to be well prepared. Whether it's due to the summer heat or the lack of daylight in winter, more and more mountain bike enthusiasts are going out at night. Lights, company, equipment, and the route to be ridden are all factors to consider on any nighttime mountain bike ride.

The lights, to see and be seen

For a nighttime mountain bike ride, it's essential to have good lighting so you can see and be seen. The front light should point 2 meters in front of the wheel to anticipate any obstacles, and the rear light should be powerful so you can be seen. Reflective clothing is also helpful, and it's a good idea to wear a headlamp. It's advisable to test the lighting at dusk to make sure it's working and properly adjusted.

You have to go out in a group

For both our own safety and to share the experience, nighttime mountain bike rides should be done in a group. In case of an accident or getting lost in the dark, it's always preferable to ride with someone else. The most skilled rider should lead the group, arranged from highest to lowest skill level. The rider at the back should also be experienced, and we should stop periodically to check that no one is missing.

The equipment

Day or night, sunglasses are the best way to protect a biker's eyes from dust, branches, stones, and insects. For nighttime mountain biking, clear lenses should be used, leaving dark, polarized, or photochromic lenses for daytime use; at night, they further reduce vision. It goes without saying that a helmet and gloves are also essential.

Regarding clothing, it's advisable to add a windbreaker or raincoat to your backpack, a layer of warmth that will be useful if it starts to rain. It's also a good idea to pack a dry jersey or base layer, as temperatures drop, especially in the mountains. Arm warmers or leg warmers can help with this. A fully charged cell phone, food, drinks, and a little money are also essential in your backpack, as well as a repair kit.

Known routes

As we accumulate kilometers under the moonlight, we gain experience, but the first nighttime mountain bike rides should be short and on familiar trails. Gradually, we can increase the mileage, but always riding on trails that have been made during the day to better orient ourselves and avoid getting lost in the mountains.

In short, we need to prepare well for both nighttime and daytime mountain biking rides, with the added benefit that nighttime mountain biking requires good lighting. We mustn't make the mistake of thinking that less water or food is needed, as it's a very physically demanding activity, and cyclists must be well prepared. And of course, we must also respect nature.
