Tracks of the Volcanoes

Cycle through volcanoes, beech forests and medieval villages through one of the most amazing natural landscapes in Catalonia.

Description

TRACKS VOLCANS is a self-guided mountain bike route through La Garrotxa that allows you to discover the most important volcanic landscape on the Iberian Peninsula. A multi-stage adventure through ancient volcanoes, lava flows, lush forests, and some of the most beautiful medieval villages in Girona.

The route enters the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park , a territory comprised of nearly forty volcanic cones and more than twenty lava flows. Over time, this landscape has been transformed into a network of beech and holm oak forests and trails, creating an extraordinary setting for mountain biking.

The route combines forest tracks, trails, and rural roads that cross through special areas such as the Fageda d'en Jordà beech forest . It also passes through towns like Rupit, Mieres, Besalú, Castellfollit de la Roca, Olot, Santa Pau, Les Preses, Joanetes, and Cantonigròs , showcasing the natural, historical, and gastronomic richness of La Garrotxa.

TRACKS VOLCANS offers a physically demanding but balanced experience. It can be completed in three or four stages and is especially suitable for cyclists accustomed to multi-day MTB routes and varied terrain.

The full-suspension bicycle is the most recommended option, although it can also be complemented with an e-MTB if you have technical experience and sufficient autonomy.

You can adapt the number of stages, accommodations, and services to the characteristics of your group. We design tailor-made TRACKS VOLCANS routes starting from a minimum of two cyclists.

TRACKS VOLCANS is a multi-stage MTB route that traverses the Garrotxa region and other inland landscapes of Girona and Barcelona. The full version starts and finishes in Torelló, forming a large circular route.

The first stage leads from Torelló to Joanetes, crossing the Collsacabra mountain range and bringing cyclists closer to the volcanic landscapes of La Garrotxa. The route combines forest tracks, trails, and paths through woods before reaching this small village located next to the Vall d'en Bas valley.

The second day connects Joanetes with Castellfollit de la Roca and allows you to discover some of the most emblematic places in the region. The route passes through the area around Olot, Santa Pau, the Fageda d'en Jordà beech forest, Mieres, and Besalú before reaching the spectacular basalt cliff of Castellfollit.

From Castellfollit de la Roca, the third stage returns to Joanetes, crossing new paths, forests, and volcanic areas. In the complete option, a fourth day connects Joanetes with Torelló and completes the circular route by passing through Cantonigròs.

FAQ

FAQ

Ideal bike
Without a doubt, a full-suspension bike is the most suitable for this type of route.
Versatile tires are the most appropriate, as there are many different surfaces (rock slabs, paths, steps, tracks, loose rock sections, cobblestones, singletrack, etc.). This is an area with a lot of vegetation and fairly narrow trails: local bikers use tubeless tires or inner tubes with sealant.
The self-guided route is followed using a GPS track. The organizers also provide participants with a map of the route, highlighting points of interest along the stages, restaurants, accommodations, etc.
It can be done year-round, but spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; in summer it is usually hot, but the route is largely in the shade, along paths and bush roads.
There are plenty of challenging and technical trails and paths, both uphill and downhill. Depending on your technical skills and strength, the route is 95% rideable. There are some uphill sections and downhill sections that, we imagine, are only accessible to bikers with names like Hermida, Oulego & Co.
This is a self-guided, non-competitive tour; the important thing is to enjoy mountain biking in its purest form.
Given the technical nature of the route, it is highly recommended to book this service. The price depends on the number of people and the stages of the route.
The organization offers support services on the road.
At each stage, you will pass through one or more villages where you can stop to eat and get water.
